Canasta for Three and Four Players: Rules
Canasta can be played with three players, everyone for themselves, and with four players in two partnerships. The basic rules are the same as with two players, see Canasta rules. This page covers the differences.
Canasta with three players
- Everyone plays for themselves.
- Each player receives 13 cards.
- You draw two cards per turn or take the discard pile.
- One canasta is enough to go out.
With three players the stock runs out faster than with two, because three players draw. With two canastas required to go out, most rounds would end with an empty stock. That is why one canasta is enough. This is the standard in Canasta Salon and can be changed in the house rules.
Some rule sets allow shifting partnerships with three players: whoever takes the discard pile first plays the rest of the round alone against the other two. Canasta Salon plays the simpler form, everyone for themselves.
Canasta with four players
- Two partnerships of two players each. Your partner sits opposite you.
- Each player receives 11 cards.
- You draw one card per turn or take the discard pile.
- The partnership melds together. Your melds and your partner's lie together, and you build the same canastas.
- One canasta of the partnership is enough to go out.
- The partnership's first meld must reach the minimum value. If your partner has already melded, you may add freely.
- Red threes count for the partnership.
Asking your partner
Before going out you may ask your partner: "May I go out?" If they say yes, you must go out. If they say no, you may not go out this turn and keep at least two cards in hand. Asking is optional. Whoever does not ask goes out whenever they like.
In Canasta Salon the computer partner asks this question, and you can ask it too. Online, your human partner answers on their own phone.
Scoring in partnerships
At the end of the round the partnership adds everything up: melds, canastas, red threes and the bonus for going out. The cards in both partners' hands count against them. The values are on the page Scoring and card values.
Partnership tactics
- No table talk. Only the question "May I go out?" is allowed. Everything else you read from your partner's melds and discards.
- Feed your partner: discard cards your partner has melded when the opponents cannot take the pile anyway, for example because it is frozen.
- Do not go out too early: going out scores 100 points. A second canasta scores 300 or 500. If your partner holds many cards, going out early often costs more than it earns. That is what the question is for.
Play with three or four
In Canasta Salon you play with three or four against computer opponents or online with friends. With four players you choose the partnerships yourselves in the lobby. Free for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.evorence.canasta
