Canasta for Two Players: Rules
Two-player Canasta is the original form of the game and still the most popular. Both players play against each other, each collecting their own melds. The basic rules are on the page Canasta rules. This page covers what is special about two players.
The deal
- Each player receives 15 cards.
- The remaining cards form the stock. The top card is turned face up next to it and opens the discard pile.
- If the first card is a red three or a wild card, it is placed crosswise under the pile and the next card is turned up.
The turn with two players
- You draw two cards from the stock or take the discard pile.
- You discard one card.
- So after every turn you hold one more card than before, as long as you do not meld.
Drawing two cards makes up for having only two players at the table. Otherwise the stock would run out quickly and canastas would rarely be completed.
Going out with two players
To go out you need two canastas. Getting rid of all your cards is not enough. Only with the second canasta may you discard your last card or meld everything.
This is the most important difference from games with more players, where one canasta is enough.
Tactics for two players
- Guard the pile: with two players your opponent sees every meld you make. Do not discard cards of a rank they have already melded. Otherwise you hand them the pile.
- Freezing: a wild card on the pile freezes it. Then your opponent also needs two natural cards from their hand. This pays off when the pile is large and you have no use for it yourself.
- Do not meld too early: whoever melds early shows their ranks. It is often worth waiting with the first meld until the pile is big enough to take with it.
- Count cards: there are eight cards of each rank. If six of them are face up, you can discard that rank safely.
Game length
A game to 5,000 points usually takes three to five rounds with two players. For a quick game in between, play to 1,500 points. Canasta Salon offers both lengths, and every game can be paused and continued later.
